Good afternoon:
We use Overdrive to provide our patrons access to digital audiobooks.
However since Overdrive titles technically do not work for I-Pod users I
am
curious if any libraries are purchasing MP3-CD audiobooks so that
patrons
can tranfer audio-books to their I-Pods. We have not purchased MP3-CD
audio-books because when we asked patrons if they had CD players in
their
cars that could handle them the answer was no. I have always wished the
answer was yes, because of the lower price and fewer discs associated
with
them.
I am curious about how other libraries are providing audio-books to
patrons who use I-Pods. Thanks for your help.

Hi Angela!
Our library system carries them. We just moved the collection to my
branch to try to drum up some business with them-- they are slow to take
hold, but when people ask about them, they always seem interested in the
idea. They are convenient in many ways, and more cars have MP3 players
each year. But, they are more useful for MP3 player-users than they are
for drivers at this point. I've pointed them out to many people here
who use Mp3 players and dislike loading all those disks on their
computers. This has been a good solution for those people. Not to
mention the Mac users we have as patrons. A friend of mine was
complaining that she couldn't use the downloadable audio website
subscription at all because her computer was a Mac. She can use the CD
books but she really likes the MP3-CD because of the one disk, rather
than a bunch.
Hope this helps! I can hook you up with the email of our collection
development AV specialist if you like: just send an email if you'd like
his contact information. He could give you more details.

Just wanted to make sure that all were clear - regular audiobooks (non
MP3 cds) can be downloaded to iPods as well. They just take more cds to
rip to your iPod, but they play just fine once they are on there.

Hi,
I'm interested in finding out whether you have an annual title count
limit for new materials added to the collection. We have this with
the rationale that it keeps our workload on an even keel for
Cataloging and increases circulation.
We are required to not add more than 19,000 new titles (print and
nonprint) a year. If it is a different edition of the same title, it
is considered a new title. We have a main library and 8 branches
with a materials budget of $2.4 million (including periodicals and
databases). We have approximately 121,000 registered borrowers with
a population base of 172,627.
If you do have title count guidelines, could you please let me know
how this figure was determined for your library.
Thanks in advance,
Dawn
